Squoosh: a free, easy way to shrink your images
Big images slow your site down. Squoosh makes them smaller in seconds, for free.
Site speed matters, both to your visitors and to search engines, and big image files are one of the most common reasons a site is slow. The good news is that shrinking them is one of the quickest wins there is.
When a link to a new image compression tool went round our office, a room full of developers and designers got far more excited than anyone else would. The tool was Squoosh, made by the Google Chrome team.
What is Squoosh?
Squoosh is a simple web app. Drag an image in, pick a format (such as MozJPEG, OptiPNG or WebP) and use a slider to set the compression. It shows you how big the new file will be as you go.
A second slider sits across the image itself, so you can compare the before and after side by side and check you haven't lost too much quality. There are advanced settings if you want them, but you can usually get a great balance of size and quality without touching them.
Where do I get it?
Go to squoosh.app. It runs in your browser, and once it's loaded it even works offline.
When should I use it?
Any time you add images to your own site. Run each one through Squoosh before you upload it. Smaller images make your pages load faster, and they keep your site's storage and backups smaller too.
